Comparing a Purple Shampoo for Brunettes With Blonde Highlights (No More Brassiness!)

If you are a happy owner of the ombre hairstyle with blonde or silver highlights or have grey hair, you should probably know how hard it is to keep it from turning orange. And it’s been just a week since you came back from the salon! Sounds familiar? Great, then these 5 purple shampoo reviews are exactly what you need! Stick with me to find out more about the products that will surely keep the yellow color away from your glorious hair.

New to the color maintaining routine? No problem! In this article, you will find out how to obtain and keep those adorable ashy or silver tones.

You probably know the dark-haired people who choose to go total blonde at some point in their lives. And that’s OK – everybody wants to try something new or unusual once in a while.

Dyes, toners, and colors have never been as diverse and affordable as they are now. Fashion magazines, Instagram and YouTube, are bursting with ideas. You only have to choose what you like best.

It seems that lately, one of the hottest hair color trends has been ash. 10 years ago, getting and maintaining this color would be costly. Even the most permanent dyes would eventually lose sharpness, and the toning care products were not reasonably priced.

10 years ago, the trend was on the warmer side of the scale. Today things have changed, and now the dimmer shades have conquered the minds and hearts of the style enthusiasts who want to keep up with the fashion.

Luckily, now we have much more options to lower the impact of the bleach, dye and the sun damage that provide a fair amount of the adverse effects on your hair.

Don’t be afraid to experiment! To change color, you can go to a salon or make it an entirely DIY pursuit, but the critical thing is to know how to maintain your hair correctly and how to prevent color loss after a few washes when, all of a sudden, the hair becomes dull and yellow.

For this matter, here are 3 useful tips to help you choose your personal best purple shampoo for brunettes with blonde highlights.

Take Care

This may sound obvious, but our environment is far from being perfect, and the pollution can cause severe damage to the skin on your head and the hair. When your head is itchy, and your hair is brittle and frail, using bleach or any other kind of stable dyes can only make things worse. So you should facilitate color maintenance, such as profound nourishment and repair masks.

Know Your Color

This applies not only to the color you have by nature but also to the one you want to obtain. This has to do with the color spectrum – understanding it will help you choose what suits you the best. This means that you have to look for the opposing colors that counterbalance each other, like this:

– Purple – yellow
– Blue – orange
– Green – red

Regarding the shampoos, this means that you have to study your hair closely in the mirror and find out which color prevails. But generally, the purple ones are the most effective in taking away brassy tones. So it seems like a fair move to try a purple shampoo first. But beware: these washes not only take away the unwanted yellowishness but are very likely to tone your hair, too. Purple shampoo, in this regard, will give your hair a slightly greyish or even purplish hue. But if this is something you are looking forward to, then there is nothing to worry about.

How to Use

Most washes of this kind are suitable for any hair type, but many of them include the components leading to allergic responses. They can make your hair and the head skin drier than before, and even cause dandruff. To avoid any of that, please read all the labels carefully before using the products.

Some washes also provide Ultraviolet protection which is especially useful in the warmer areas where the sun is active during the whole day.

After a long day in the sun, you get a suntan because your body produces melanin. It is a natural pigment protecting you from the ultraviolet radiation. The level of melanin also determines how light or dark our hair naturally is, and works just the same way when we spend a lot of time in the open sun. During the long exposure to UV, the level of melanin rises, making our bleached hair lose its distinct color.

As we age, the level of melanin decreases, and the hair goes grey and white. The “dirty” look that the grey hair may sometimes have appears due to the uneven allocation of the pigment within the hair shaft.

A purple shampoo, in its turn, counteracts the yellowish colors (see the color spectrum above) and works as a shield against the sun radiation, retaining the melanin level. As a result, your hair color doesn’t fade as fast and stays beautiful and protected.

So it’s time to take a look at these 5 purple shampoo reviews!

1. Clairol Shimmer Lights Shampoo + Conditioner

This is probably the most well-known and efficient purple wash you can find today. It comes at a fair price, and its composition allows the tone to go right inside the hair shaft creating natural looks.

Composition

This purple shampoo by Clairol appears to be more violet than purple. It has a silvery shimmer and is quite dense. It has a pretty strong scent too, so you may want to use some extra washes in case you find it repelling. This shampoo is not free of sulfates. Sodium laureth sulfate (SLS) is a rather aggressive component that may cause allergy. So please test it before applying!

Application

Moisten your hair and apply generously to the dyed areas. If you need to improve the ends exclusively, don’t use it on the whole length – the product impacts only the dyed locks. Let it absorb for about 5 minutes and cleanse the hair thoroughly. Make sure you have no purple tint left on your face and skin if you’re using it while taking a shower.

Useful Tips

To get the greyish or even the purplish hue, leave it for a bit longer than 5 minutes. Its formula efficiently combats all kinds of orange tones, but the procedure can noticeably dry out your hair, if repeated frequently. Pair it with a toning conditioner to consolidate the result and consider using some after-wash repairing products to relieve the damage.

2. Touch Of Silver: Daily Maintenance Shampoo, Nourish Conditioner & Brightening Shampoo by PRO:VOKE (a Set of 3)

This set of 3 products by PRO:VOKE has been created to provide the maximum effect on the blonde, silver and grey hair. This wash is cruelty-free and can be used by vegetarians and vegans.

Composition

The Touch of Silver set includes 2 shampoos. Both of them are of rich color but have a more watery texture, if compared to the previous one. They too have a rather strong smell, but it fades away as soon as the hair gets dry. These shampoos contain sulfates that can cause dryness and itchy scalp.

Application

Moisten your hair and spread the wash evenly throughout the whole length. Leave it for up to 5 minutes. The purple pigment will extinguish the yellowishness and tone your hair. The Daily Maintenance Shampoo contains sunflower seeds extract that allows UV-damage protection which makes it good for frequent use. The Brightening Shampoo is to be used 2 times per week to enhance and revive the color.

Useful Tips

In case you have dyed your hair recently, please don’t start using the set straightaway. Wait for at least 2 weeks after you have changed the color. Use deep healing and repairing masks after washing. Also, try to avoid contact with clothes and any other porous surfaces. All purple washes leave stains, even Pravana purple shampoo. But never mind, as long as they create a really awesome effect on your hair – just don’t apply the washes when your favorite clothes are on.

3. Conditioning Shampoo by Generic Value Products

The front of this wash’s bottle reads: Compare to Clairol Shimmer Lights, and it this speaks for itself. It has been designed as a more reasonably priced substitute for the Clairol purple wash that we’ve talked about earlier. But is it indeed a satisfying alternative?

Composition

This wash is rich purple and has a strong flavor like others. It contains sulfates, as well as methylchloroisothiazolinone and benzyl salicylate which has been associated with allergies and can lead to dermatitis. So use it carefully and make sure you’re not allergic to any of those components!

Application

Have a handful of the liquid and massage it in your wet hair starting from the crown of your head. Leave it for at least 5 minutes, and then rinse out. This purple shampoo for blonde hair suits and works awesome on the grey hair as well, banishing the orange colors with the same efficiency.

Useful Tips

Although this shampoo both washes and conditions, make sure it doesn’t stay on your hair longer than for 5 minutes. Purple shampoos have been created to eliminate yellowishness, but, sadly, this procedure can exhaust your hair leading to fizziness, dryness, and brittleness. Use repairing and nourishing masks to counterbalance the damaging effects. Also, avoid the eye contact with the substance, since the active chemical components used in its composition can hurt sensitive areas.

4. Color Balance Purple Shampoo & Conditioner by Joico

This Joico purple shampoo has the reputation of an effective color care wash that sufficiently bans any brass colors, just like the best purple shampoo Ulta. The Joico company has also been known for adopting and supporting green technologies in their manufacturing and doesn’t test its products on animals.

Composition

This wash has a pretty dense texture and a classic purple color. And it, too, has a distinct flavor. You may have noticed that some of the components listed on the bottle can provoke irritation (like sodium laureth sulfate and limonene). However, the Joico purple shampoo complies with the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, so it’s quite safe. Please read the directions on the bottle’s label carefully before use.

Application

Massage a handful of the product into your wet hair starting from the roots (if you are a total blonde) and leave it to absorb for 2 to 5 minutes. Then cleanse thoroughly. This wash can cause dryness, so it is better to follow the treatment with the Color Balance Conditioner included in this set. Using this formula 2 or 3 times a week will fundamentally improve the brassy colors.

Useful Tips

If left for longer than 5 minutes, it can give the ashy hue. It is also possible that you get a purplish tinge. Altogether, the Joico purple shampoo will ban out the brassiness and give your hair a colder, fresher look.

5. #BlondeMoment Purple Shampoo for Blonde Hair Highlights by Winsome & Wisdom

This product by Winsome & Wisdom is not only good for blondes who want to get rid of the bronze tone and revitalize their locks. It counterbalances all the range of warm colors, which makes it an excellent purple shampoo for silver hair, as well as grey hair and the hair with highlights. It will work as a shield against the sun and spare you the trouble of using any additional UV protectants.

Composition

This wash has a vibrant purple color and a comparatively mild smell. It doesn’t include parabens, but it is not a sulfate-free purple shampoo. The sulfates are used to facilitate lather and enhance its cleansing properties.

Application

Work the generous amount into the wet hair and create lather. Let it absorb for 3 to 5 minutes. Then cleanse thoroughly. Remember that the longer you don’t rinse it, the ashier tone you’ll get. The wash performs best if used not more than twice a week.

Useful Tips

Use revitalizing masks and other repairing treatment, because the frequent use is likely to cause irritation and dryness. That can happen because the detergents used in the production of various washes strip the skin from its natural oils making it more sensitive.

Conclusion

Admit, the color change has never been easier. If you have ever dreamed of some crazy hairstyle, now it’s your time to experiment! You can do it yourself or go to a salon, but at some point in time, you’ll need to take care of your looks yourself. And that is where the purple shampoos come into play!

There is a plethora of various lightening and toning washes that will help you maintain color at home and combat the brass without the need to arrange a costly appointment with a hair stylist. Today, creating an impression of the freshly dyed hair has become available to anybody.

Upon choosing a purple shampoo, remember that it is very likely to make your hair significantly dier. They all contain active agents that allow counterbalancing yellowishness and boosting up the silvery, cold hues. But they are not very healthy for frequent use. It is not recommended to use purple washes more than 2 or 3 times a week.

Pay attention to how your hair and scalp respond to the new wash. If your hair gets frail and frizzy, or your head gets itchy, consider trying a different treatment. You can also use stronger conditioner and other after-wash care products. Your goal is not to burn the hair irrevocably, but to improve its condition. Good hair will alter your spirits and make you walk with dignity, like a model from a shampoo commercial.

Also, some of the shampoos provide the UV protection, and if by nature your hair is very dark, you may want to look for a product of such kind. A purple wash can also tone your hair, giving it a fabulous greyish hue. But be careful not to let it stay on your hair for too long unless you were consciously aiming at the more purplish tinge.

It is prohibited to apply purple shampoo before and after right after the color change. Also, some of the beauty products are still being tested on animals. If you are a vegan or a vegetarian, or these are the issues that concern you, study the labels carefully to find out if the wash is cruelty-free and whether it causes any harm to the environment.

The last thing I want to point out is that some of these shampoos may have really strong pigments that can leave stains on clothes, so use them carefully. I would also suggest wearing rubber gloves if you’re not in the shower where you can quickly clean your hands and nails. Otherwise, you may end up with an outstanding hairstyle and violet palms.

I believe now you are ready to pick up the wash that will become your best purple shampoo for brunettes with blonde highlights.

  • I’m a 56 years YOUNG brunette transitioning to natural gray/silver. I haven’t dyed my hair (Expresso Brown) for almost 2 years now. My natural hair is coming in kind of a gun metal gray, or graige. I have alot of little silver highlights with chunks of silvery white coming through around my face, so I bought the Conditioning Shampoo by Generic Value Products (similar to Clairol’s Shimmer Lights) and I really love how it makes my silvers sparkle! It does leave my hair a bit on the dry side, so I only use it for 5 minutes with a really good conditioning hair mask afterwards (usually Hask’s Manoi Coconut Oil Deep Cond. … my favorite!). I try not to use too many hair-styling products, but I do flat iron my hair 1-2 times per week with a bit of hair spray to hold my long bangs back. When I see the ‘golden red’ (Scottish-Welsh hair) showing through, I just use the shampoo once or twice that week, then I’m good for a couple more weeks! Shampoo :: It’s a bright purple-violet color with a nice smell, not too overpowering. Hasn’t stained my hands or shower, so that’s a plus.
